This is the first episode of the series where I ramble about my favorite artists at the moment. Today, I'm gonna be going over Skrillex before Skrillex was a thing: Gigi! Gigi! GIGI D'AGOSTINO!
Even though many may see him as another copypasta-beat DJ amongst many other copypasta-beat DJs there were at his time, I promise you he's a TRUE pioneer at his shit! He was already one of the first in the trance scene (author's note: I like to pronounce trance as trancEY irl, so that people don't think I'm referring to breakcore) during the mid 90s, and as a matter of fact, I'm listening to one of his tracks from his 1996 album Le Voyage '96 right now as I'm typing this, and let me tell ya, it's a good bgm treat! But his real breakthrough prolly came with the release of Bla Bla Bla, which has frenetic vocals rapping about "hopping on to the thang, Wha Ben" and one of the first instances of the mastermind musician trick that I like to call 'le invisible bouncé', where he takes the kick from the first beat of the first bar of the second 4-bar segment of the bass drop and just kills it with hellfire, so that when the second kick comes alongside the claps, it gets a humongous extra bounce to it, kinda like jumping irl; your first jump is when you propell yourself up with your legs (sorry, parapleegs or parapleges or whatchamacallit) and the following jumps are the ones accompanied by the sound of your f*et hitting the ground. He would go on to use 'le invisible bouncé' in many of his next hits, as well as all the three different mixes that he made of Bla Bla Bla. That's right! He made THR33 remixes of the same song, one darker than the other - "Bla Bla Bla (Abbentenza Mix)", "Bla Bla Bla (Dark Mix)" and "A.A.A."! Fuckin' A.A.A., man!!! Even Tiesto got shivers hearing it!
Another way is Another classic, as well! At first, I thought that the lyrics or at least the melody of this tune were interpolated from an 80s song, in the same vain as The Riddle, because there's no way that a chorus melody THIS PERFECT could come from a 90s trance DJ like Gigi. Well, I mean, it's almost perfect, because the "oh oh oh" part just sounds a bit too similar to the Pokémon theme for my liking, but I'll dismiss it, for now.
But I know what you're here for: The troompet song. The soccer anthem. The one that doesn't care what you've done in your life. I will admit, I too love L'Amour Toujour as much as everyone else who's listened to it. The lyrics are not really the best, but everything else is gold, and even if it's fools gold, it's still quite shiny! There will never ever be another melody like the one from this song! The whole thing paired with the music video somehow makes me feel like I'm outdoors, naked at 3AM. In other words, ̶t̶h̶e̶ ̶o̶w̶l̶s̶ ̶l̶i̶k̶e̶ ̶m̶y̶ ̶c̶o̶c̶k̶ this shit is cold af! And it's not even the original version. The original one has a completely different, almost industrial non-trancey beat to it, which I also like cuz it makes feel like I'm only SEMI-naked at 3AM outdoors.
Yes, I've watched a couple of his more recent live shows, and they're quite glamorous, with Gigi always flawlessly packing that sailor outfit no lady can resist! Of course, most of the time, the led screens only displays the words "Gigi" and "D'Agostino" in a fancy way while he plays live, so don't expect him to be the best alternative to The Chemical Bros, but it still looks a lot like one of those cruise ship shows Roberto Carlos has been doing every year since the 1800s, except with synths involved, which is more than acceptable for me!
That's all I got to say about this mastermind. I might check out his other songs, but these are already enough for me! Next episode, I'll be going over Pendulum or Skream or some shit like that, so stick around.
